The earliest traces of card decks can be dated back to 9th-century China, where these cards were played to entertain nobility and royalty. When the deck of cards later reached Europe in the 14th century, the game quickly spread through all strata of society. The deck of cards soon became more standardized, leading to the emergence of the four suit symbols we know today: hearts, diamonds, spades, and clubs.
