The Jagdtiger, or Panzerjäger Tiger Ausf. B, was the heaviest armored fighting vehicle ever to see combat in World War II. Developed late in the conflict, only around 80 units actually reached combat, the first in September 1944. Germany, like many other nations, exploited existing tank designs to create self-propelled guns and tank destroyers. The Jagdtiger was a colossal example of this practice – the Germans sought to upgrade the formidable Tiger II by mounting the 128mm Pak 44 cannon in a specially built armored casemate on top of the extended King Tiger chassis.

Here are some of the key characteristics of the Jagdtiger:

• Weight: 71 tons, making it one of the heaviest armored vehicles in history.
• Armor: Nearly 10 inches (250 mm) of frontal armor, providing excellent protection against enemy fire.
• Gun Type: Equipped with a 128mm PaK 44 anti-tank cannon, renowned for its ability to penetrate Allied armor at long ranges.
• Limited Mobility: Despite its powerful armament, it suffered from low reliability, meaning many roads and bridges could not support its weight.

• Legendary Commander: One of the companies in the 512th battalion was led by the famous Panzer Ace Otto Carius, credited with destroying over 150 tanks.
