When it was introduced into combat in 1944, it created significant problems for the Allies, but arrived too late and in too few numbers to completely change the outcome of the war.

The Königstiger was used on both the Western and Eastern Fronts, equipped with a long 8.8cm cannon with outstanding operational precision, giving it the ability to knock out Allied tanks at ranges over 2.5 kilometers. Two different turrets were designed by Porsche and Henschel, leading to interesting competitions for the contract. The first Henschel chassis rolled off the production line with a turret from the rejected Porsche project. A total of 50 Porsche turrets were mounted on Henschel hulls and used in combat until the Henschel turret became available.

The first combat experience for the King Tiger took place during the battles in Normandy by the 503rd Heavy Panzer Battalion (s.H.Pz.Abt.503), where it resisted Operation Atlantic between Troarn and Demouville on July 18, 1944. On the Eastern Front, it debuted on August 12, 1944, by the 501st Heavy Panzer Battalion (s.H.Pz.Abt.501) resisting the Lvov–Sandomierz offensive, where it attacked the Soviet bridgehead over the Vistula River near Baranów Sandomierski.
