In an attempt to subjugate Earth and become its sole sovereign, Loki of Asgard, foster brother to Prince Thor, allied himself with the titan conqueror Thanos through his servant known as "The Other", who made an army of extraterrestrials available to the God of Mischief. A race called the Chitauri, a sentient species of cybernetically enhanced beings operating under a hive mind intelligence, in exchange for the infinite gem known as the Tesseract. The Tesseract is a crystalline cube-shaped containment vessel for the Space Stone, which was previously under the protection of the Asgardians and kept inside Odin's vault.

Loki teleported himself to the S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters where he took control of the minds of Clint Barton, Hawkeye, and also the scientist Erik Selvig, to use their combat skills and knowledge of the Tesseract. Erik Selvig built a device installed at Stark Tower, which, along with the Tesseract stolen by Loki, opened a wormhole portal for his army of Chitauri and Leviathans to invade New York.
