The Type 97 Chi-Ha tank was a response to the limitations of the previous 57mm weapon, particularly during the battles against the Soviets at Nomonhan in 1939. To meet the new challenges, Japan developed a new 47mm cannon, but due to industrial limitations, the upgraded version, the Shinhoto Chi-Ha, did not enter service until 1942. Although Japan did not expect modern Allied medium tank support in the Pacific, it turned out that their tank force was largely obsolete.
