Warlord Games
Formed from the Western Desert Force in 1941, the British 8th Army was made up of soldiers from across the British Commonwealth - Britons, New Zealanders, Australians, Indians, and South Africans. After early successes against the Italians in North Africa, the 8th Army was suddenly faced with a new and deadlier enemy - the Deutsches Afrika Korps, led by the charismatic commander Erwin Rommel. This began a series of operations in which the Allies and Axis powers were pushed back hundreds of miles, only to reclaim that territory and more with legendary battles at El Alamein, Tobruk, and Beda Fomm. With the Allied victory in North Africa, the fighting soon spread to Tunisia and then to the heart of Italy itself.
The 8th Army fought against the oppressive daytime heat, stifling dust, and cold nights while battling their German and Italian opponents. The 8th Army became more popularly known as "The Desert Rats" - a nickname adopted from the 7th Armoured Division, a key component of the Western Desert Force.
